Catecholamines are a group of biogenic amines derived from the amino acid tyrosine and bearing the catechol (3,4-dihydroxy- phenyl)-moiety: adrenaline, noradrenaline and dopamine are secreted from phaeochromocytomes which are functional tumors derived from chromaffin cells of the adrenal medulla and paraganglions. Since normal chromaffin tissue produces biogenic amines, too, it is essential to monitor the levels of these molecules. Significantly raised levels of adrenalin, noradrenalin or dopamine are a clear marker for the presence of a phaeochromocytoma.
