澳大利亞阿德萊德大學腫瘤外科醫(yī)生、免疫治療師Brendon Coventry看到了物理學家和腫瘤學家研究的價值,他們拼湊了現(xiàn)存的醫(yī)學證據(jù),試著理解癌癥的起源。“投入到生物學和醫(yī)學中的龐大資金和智力資源都未能在正常抗癌戰(zhàn)爭中取得重大突破,或許是時候采取新視角了。”Coventry說,“一位宇宙學家能將細胞視為‘內部宇宙’,并利用新方法對其進行探索。”
And Davies and colleagues have begun to test their theories more directly in response to questions. Davies explains that "the key to our theory is to think about the age of the cancer genes." The regression model shows that in the initial stages of cancer, cells can recover to a more primitive model and the newly evolved functions are shut down. The team therefore predicted that in the process of cancer development, the latest evolution of genes will lose its function, whereas the ancient genes will be activated.
To test whether this hypothesis is correct, the Davies team cross-references current cancer genome mapping data and databases of various taxa. These data can help biologists trace the gene's age. Any correlation between gene age and cancer will support regression models. "I've never put together these data before, but data mining is so important and that's what we're doing right now," says Davies.
Brendon Coventry, a tumor surgeon and immunotherapist at the University of Adelaide in Australia, sees the value of research done by physicists and oncologists who put together existing medical evidence and try to understand the origins of cancer. "It is perhaps time to take a fresh perspective for both the huge capital and inlectual resources devoted to biology and medicine to fail to make major breakthroughs in the normal war on cancer," said Coventry. "A cosmologist can think of cells as 'Internal universe' and explore it with new methods. "
