研究自然水樣中的浮游植物生理活性時(shí)，一般步驟是：首先分離純化（多為顯微鏡下用毛細(xì)管挑藻），獲得純種細(xì)胞后擴(kuò)大培養(yǎng)，然后研究其生理活性。這個(gè)過(guò)程至少需要2－3個(gè)月。而且有些在自然條件下經(jīng)常發(fā)生水化/赤潮的微藻，分離后總是無(wú)法成功養(yǎng)活（特別是海洋甲藻）。

現(xiàn)在，只需取水樣回來(lái)，在顯微鏡視野中找出您感興趣的1個(gè)或幾個(gè)細(xì)胞，就可檢測(cè)它（們）的光合作用活性，省去了分離培養(yǎng)的步驟，大大節(jié)省了時(shí)間。對(duì)許多至今仍無(wú)法分離培養(yǎng)成功的藻類(lèi)，也可研究其生理活性。
